Thursday, 8 October 2026. This is what happened in the market today, taken from exchange data and news reports. It is a record of the session, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.
The Nifty fell 1.64% to 22,231.80, its second fall in a row, as Brent crude rose above $104 a barrel. Only three of the 50 index stocks closed higher. The midcap and smallcap indices lost more than the Nifty, and India VIX rose 10.01%. TCS reported its September-quarter results after the close.

How the day went
The Nifty opened at 22,599.05, which was 4.00 points below Wednesday's close of 22,603.05, and that opening price was also its high for the day. The first 15-minute candle closed at 22,503.55. The index then slid through the morning, and the sharpest single step came in the 11:15 to 11:30 AM candle, which fell from 22,442.50 to 22,338.15 after touching 22,328.45.
The slide continued through the afternoon. The day's low of 22,179.90 came in the 3:00 to 3:15 PM candle, and the index closed at 22,231.80, 51.90 points above it. The day's range was 419.15 points. Kite's 52-week figures show that low as the lowest level for the Nifty in the past 52 weeks.
The Sensex opened at 72,668.00, traded between 71,327.75 and 72,693.97, and closed at 71,593.24. At its low it was 1,310.95 points below Wednesday's close. Bank Nifty traded between 54,383.15 and 55,043.00 and fell 0.98%, less than the Nifty.
India VIX rose 1.39 points to 15.28 after touching 15.48. (What India VIX measures.)
HDFC Sky counted 3,280 shares falling against 951 rising, with 180 unchanged.
Crude, the rupee and foreign selling
Kotak Neo reported that higher crude oil prices, US bond yields and persistent selling by foreign institutional investors pulled the indices down. It put Brent crude for December delivery at $104.47 a barrel and WTI for November at $91.95. HDFC Sky linked the crude move to concerns over Middle East supplies and attacks on shipping in the Gulf, and reported that foreign portfolio investors had sold on Wednesday for a ninth straight session.
The rupee fell 13 paise to 96.88 against the dollar, HDFC Sky reported, after opening at 96.71. The same report put Brent at $104.41, up 4.20%, and the dollar index at 102.40.
This came a day after the Reserve Bank of India raised the repo rate to 5.50%, which I covered in yesterday's post-market report.

TCS results after the close
TCS fell 0.21% to ₹2,076 during the session and reported its September-quarter results after market hours. According to Upstox, net profit was ₹13,884 crore, up 14.98% from a year earlier and 4.01% from the June quarter. The company declared a dividend of ₹12 a share, with a record date of 14 October and payment on 30 October. Upstox also reported a total contract value of $9.6 billion for the quarter's deals and attrition of 13.3%. Business Today reported that TCS added 4,258 employees on a net basis, taking headcount to 598,056.
FII and DII flows
For Wednesday, 7 October, 5paisa now shows foreign institutions as net sellers of ₹6,121.40 crore in the cash market (gross purchases ₹12,578.00 crore, sales ₹18,699.30 crore). Domestic institutions were net buyers of ₹4,596.60 crore. That matches the provisional figures from Trendlyne I quoted yesterday, to within a few paise.
Today's provisional figures were not out on the sites I checked at about 6:55 PM: 5paisa and Trendlyne still showed 7 October as the latest day, and NSE's page did not load. I'll include them in tomorrow's pre-market report.
