GIFT Nifty was 22,619.5 at 8:05 AM, 10 points above Wednesday's 3:30 PM level. US stocks fell as yields rose; FIIs sold a net ₹6,121.40 crore.

Thursday, 8 October 2026. This is what changed between Wednesday's close and this morning, taken from public data and news reports. It is a list of events and numbers, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.

Wednesday's session, including the RBI's rate increase, is covered in the post-market report for 7 October.

Global cues this morning

The sources I could open gave slightly different closing levels for the Dow, so I am only listing the changes. GIFT Nifty is a futures contract, so it is not like-for-like with the Nifty 50; this morning it was 16.45 points above the Nifty's Wednesday close of 22,603.05. I did not find Asian index figures I could confirm, so I am not listing them.

Index figures are from Zerodha Kite market data. The rupee close is from PTI.

For 7 October, 5paisa, which publishes NSE's provisional data, shows foreign institutional investors (FIIs) as net sellers of ₹6,121.40 crore in the cash market (gross purchases ₹12,578.00 crore, sales ₹18,699.30 crore). Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers of ₹4,596.60 crore. Trendlyne's figures, given in last night's report, match to within a rupee crore.

US yields climb, stocks step back from records

Wall Street fell on Wednesday, the day after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records. Trading Economics reported that the 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.365% during the day, and that Treasury yields were at their highest since 2002. Yahoo Finance reported that the 30-year yield reached 5.73%, its highest since May 2002, before closing at 5.66%.

Minutes of the Federal Reserve's September meeting were released the same day. According to Yahoo Finance, they showed that most participants judged a further increase in the federal funds rate range would likely be appropriate by the end of the year.

Oil settles lower after the IEA speeds up stock releases

Brent settled 38 cents lower at $100.20 a barrel and WTI fell $1.16 to $88.28, Reuters reported. The International Energy Agency agreed to speed up releases of emergency oil stocks and to prioritise diesel. The IEA said finishing the releases it had already announced as quickly as possible could bring about 100 million barrels to market; Reuters noted that analysts and some governments did not see this as a new intervention of that size. Reuters also cited a Franceinfo report that France will release 10 million barrels of diesel from its strategic stocks.

Today's calendar

I have not checked today's IPO listings or other results, so I am not listing any.

What I check at 9:00

These are the data points I look at before the open, not a forecast:

  1. Where GIFT Nifty is at 9:00 compared with the 22,619.50 in this note.
  2. Whether NSE's own page confirms the 7 October FII and DII figures.
  3. The rupee's first quote after Wednesday's 96.78 close.

Questions people ask me

What is a Treasury yield?

A Treasury yield is the annual return an investor earns by holding a US government bond at its current market price. When bond prices fall, yields rise. The 10-year yield is widely used as a benchmark for borrowing costs.

What is a record date for a dividend?

The record date is the day on which a company checks its register of shareholders to decide who receives a declared dividend. Shareholders whose names are in the company's or the depositories' records on that date are paid.
