Friday, 9 October 2026. This is what happened in the market today, taken from exchange data and news reports. It is a record of the session, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.
The Nifty rose 1.30% to 22,520.45, its first gain after two days of falls, in the first session after TCS's September-quarter results. Every sector index in my table rose, IT the most. 46 of the 50 Nifty stocks closed higher, and India VIX fell 5.89%.

How the day went
The Nifty opened at 22,314.95, which was 83.15 points above Thursday's close of 22,231.80. The day's low of 22,294.75 came in the first 15-minute candle, 20.20 points below the open, and that candle closed at 22,375.10. The index climbed through the first hour and touched 22,515.95 in the 10:15 to 10:30 AM candle.
From there it moved sideways until early afternoon, then rose again. The day's high of 22,580.75 came in the 2:15 to 2:30 PM candle. The index eased in the last hour and closed at 22,520.45, 60.30 points below the high. The day's range was 286.00 points.
The Sensex opened at 71,776.67, traded between 71,739.49 and 72,669.20, and closed at 72,472.33. Bank Nifty traded between 54,617.20 and 55,419.30 and rose 1.36%, a little more than the Nifty.
India VIX fell 0.90 points to 14.38 after touching 13.66. It had risen 10.01% on Thursday. (What India VIX measures.)
On the BSE, 2,516 shares rose and 1,867 fell, according to the PTI report carried by The Tribune.
TCS results and the IT stocks
TCS reported its September-quarter results after Thursday's close. According to Upstox, net profit was ₹13,884 crore, up 14.98% from a year earlier, and the company declared a dividend of ₹12 a share with a record date of 14 October. The details are in yesterday's post-market report.
TCS opened at ₹2,086, rose as high as ₹2,204 (6.17% above Thursday's close) and closed at ₹2,156, up 3.85%. The Nifty IT index rose 3.02%, the most of any sector index in the table below. HCLTech rose 3.38% to ₹1,216.70 and Infosys 2.65% to ₹1,023.40. HCLTech reports its own September-quarter results on Monday.
Crude oil and Iran
The PTI report put Brent crude 1.32% lower at $102.9 a barrel, after it rose above $104 on Thursday. It linked the easing to indications that any US military action against Iran is unlikely before the US mid-term elections. Higher crude prices were one of the reasons reported for the falls on Thursday.
I couldn't find a rupee closing figure for today on the sources I checked, so I've left it out.

Apart from TCS, I haven't found a reported company-specific reason for the moves in Apollo Hospitals, ITC or Eicher Motors. (BSE joined the Nifty 50 on 30 September: what an index change involves.)
