7 min readBy NineFifteenAM

The Nifty rose 0.98% to 22,776.10 and the Sensex 0.95% to 73,067.81, both closing at the day's high. Trent jumped 12.64% after its Q2 business update.

Tuesday, 6 October 2026. This is what happened in the market today, taken from exchange data and news reports. It is a record of the session, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.

The Nifty rose 0.98% to 22,776.10, its second higher close in a row, and finished at its high for the day. Trent jumped 12.64% after its quarterly business update, Kotak Mahindra Bank rose on its own update, and the pharma and FMCG indices led the sectors. IT was the only sector index on my list to fall by more than a fraction. The RBI's policy decision is due tomorrow.

How the day went

The Nifty opened at 22,603.25, which was 47.50 points above Monday's close of 22,555.75. Its low for the day, 22,561.60, came in the first 15 minutes. That was 5.85 points above Monday's close, so the index did not trade below the previous close at any point today.

From there it rose in steps. It was at 22,658.15 by the end of the 9:45 to 10:00 AM candle and reached 22,731.85 in the 2:00 to 2:15 PM candle, before slipping to 22,684.65 in the next one. The largest move came at the end: in the 3:15 to 3:30 PM candle the Nifty went from 22,717.70 to 22,776.10, a rise of 58.40 points, and that close was also the day's high. The day's range was 214.50 points.

The Sensex opened at 72,508.05, up 125.58 points (0.17%), with a low of 72,384.83. Like the Nifty, it closed at its high, 73,067.81. Bank Nifty traded between 54,834.75 and 55,201.00.

India VIX fell 7.92% to 13.61, from 14.78. It opened at Monday's close and its low for the day was 13.52. (What India VIX measures.)

The broader market rose more than the Nifty: the Midcap 100 gained 1.08% and the Smallcap 100 1.56%. In early trade, India TV News counted 2,099 shares rising on the NSE against 873 falling.

UltraTech Cement ₹10,750.00 −0.92%

These are official closing prices. BSE has been in the Nifty 50 since 30 September, when it replaced Wipro. Coal India closed near its day's low of ₹410.60, and I haven't found a reported reason for its fall, or for the rises in Nestlé India and Hindustan Unilever. Reliance rose 2.66% to ₹1,218, just outside the top five.

Trent's business update

Trent released its September-quarter business update after the market closed on Monday. According to Kotak Neo, standalone revenue was ₹5,788 crore, up 23% from ₹4,724 crore a year earlier, and revenue for the first half of the year was ₹11,454 crore, up 21% from ₹9,505 crore. The company added 10 Westside and 17 Zudio stores on a net basis in the quarter, Zudio passed 1,000 stores, and the total network was 1,342 stores at 30 September, against 1,101 a year earlier.

The stock opened at ₹2,800, which was 8.53% above Monday's close of ₹2,580, reached ₹2,914 and closed at ₹2,906. Business Standard also reported that the shares rallied after the update.

Private banks reported their quarters

Kotak Mahindra Bank said net advances were ₹5.77 lakh crore at 30 September, up 24.7% from a year earlier. Deposits were ₹6.51 lakh crore, up 23.2%, and CASA deposits ₹2.49 lakh crore, up 11.3%, Kotak Neo reported. The stock rose 3.82% to ₹431.90 after touching ₹435.30.

Kotak Neo reported that Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank also put out business updates showing growth in advances and deposits. Axis Bank rose 2.11% to ₹1,248. Among the larger banks, HDFC Bank rose 0.94% to ₹711.45 and ICICI Bank 0.81% to ₹1,342.80. The Financial Services index gained 1.17%.

Crude, Asia and the RBI

Kotak Neo reported that crude oil prices stayed subdued because Middle East exports were running without disruption and G7 countries were releasing emergency stockpiles, and India TV News said easing crude supported sentiment at the open. The rupee opened at 96.31 to the dollar against Monday's close of 96.30, according to Kotak Neo. I couldn't find a sourced closing level for the rupee.

In Asia, India TV News reported Japan's Nikkei up 0.56%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng up 0.67% and Shanghai up 0.31% during the morning, while South Korea's Kospi fell 1.12%.

Business Standard reported that pharma, private bank and oil and gas shares supported the indices while traders waited for the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee decision.

FII and DII flows

For Monday, 5 October, the figures are now on two sites. 5paisa shows foreign institutions as net sellers of ₹4,699.10 crore in the cash market and domestic institutions as net buyers of ₹5,181.60 crore, which matches Trendlyne's ₹4,699.14 crore and ₹5,181.62 crore after rounding. Those were the figures in yesterday's report.

For today, none of the sites I checked (5paisa, Trendlyne and Kotak Neo) had figures by about 6:55 PM, and NSE's page did not load. I'll include them in tomorrow's pre-market report.

Tomorrow and this week

What I'll check before tomorrow's open

These are the data points I'll look at, not a forecast:

  1. Today's provisional FII and DII figures, on NSE and at least one data site.
  2. Where GIFT Nifty trades compared with the Nifty's close of 22,776.10.
  3. The time of the RBI announcement, and the rupee's opening level.

Correction to the 5 October report. That report used last-traded stock prices from before the closing auction. I've updated its stock tables and text with the official closes; for example, ITC's official close was ₹268.90, a rise of 5.08%. The closing auction guide explains why the two prices differ. Index figures were unchanged.

Earlier reports: 5 October post-market report, 6 October pre-market report.
