Monday, 5 October 2026. This is what happened in the market today, taken from exchange data and news reports. It is a record of the session, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.

The Nifty opened at 22,532.40, which was 110.45 points above Thursday's close of 22,421.95. It reached its high for the day, 22,621.80, in the 9:50 to 9:55 AM candle. It then fell through the morning, and the low of the day, 22,397.10, came in the 12:05 to 12:10 PM candle. That was 24.85 points below Thursday's close, so for a few minutes the index was lower on the day.

The biggest move of the afternoon came between 1:35 and 1:45 PM, when the Nifty rose 80 points, from 22,475.40 to 22,555.40. It closed at 22,555.75, which is 158.65 points above the low. The day's range was 224.70 points, smaller than Thursday's.

Kotak Neo's closing report gave the same names among the day's top gainers and losers. I haven't found a reported reason for ITC's move today.

IT stocks split

The IT index was flat, but its largest stocks went different ways. TCS rose 1.45% to ₹2,105.00. HCL Technologies fell 3.52% to ₹1,199.30, close to its day's low of ₹1,196.50. Infosys opened at ₹1,050.00 and closed at ₹1,019.00, down 1.55%. I haven't found a source for why HCL Tech and Infosys fell.

TCS has told the exchanges its board will meet on Thursday, 8 October, to approve results for the quarter to 30 September and to consider a second interim dividend, with a record date of 14 October.

HDFC Bank reversed

HDFC Bank opened at ₹731.95, 1.49% above Thursday's close, and reached ₹734.20. It then fell to a low of ₹701.25 and closed at ₹705.00, down 2.25%. India TV News reported that Anup Bagchi has been named the bank's MD and CEO and will take charge on 27 October. I have not seen a report linking that news to today's share price. Bank Nifty still rose 0.48%, with ICICI Bank up 1.72% to ₹1,333.20.

Crude, the rupee and the Fed

Kotak Neo reported that crude oil prices eased on higher exports from the Middle East and proposed releases from G7 oil reserves. It gave Brent December futures at $102.52 a barrel and WTI November futures at $90.66, and said a stronger rupee and easier crude lifted sentiment. I couldn't find a sourced closing level for the rupee.

India TV News and Business Standard reported that Asian shares rose after cooler-than-expected US jobs data led investors to trim bets on aggressive Federal Reserve tightening.

FII and DII flows

For Thursday, 1 October, the figures are now confirmed on two sites, Kotak Neo and 5paisa. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers of ₹9,484.22 crore in the cash market and domestic institutions were net buyers of ₹10,041.84 crore. These match the single-site figures in Thursday's report.

For today, only one data site, Trendlyne, had figures when I checked. It shows foreign institutions as net sellers of ₹4,699.14 crore and domestic institutions as net buyers of ₹5,181.62 crore. Kotak Neo and 5paisa still showed 1 October as their latest date, and NSE's page did not load, so treat today's numbers as unconfirmed.

Tomorrow and this week

What I'll check before tomorrow's open

These are the data points I'll look at, not a forecast:

  1. NSE's provisional FII and DII figures for 5 October, against Trendlyne's numbers above.
  2. Where GIFT Nifty trades compared with the Nifty's close of 22,555.75.
  3. Brent crude and the rupee's opening level, the two things cited for today's rise.
