Tuesday, 6 October 2026. This is what changed between Monday's close and this morning, taken from public data and news reports. It is a list of events and numbers, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.

Monday's session is covered in the post-market report for 5 October.

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract, so it is not like-for-like with the Nifty 50. This morning it was 79.25 points above the Nifty's Monday close of 22,555.75. I have percentage moves for the US indices from Yahoo Finance but no closing levels from a source I could open, so I am not printing levels. I did not check Asian markets this morning.

All index figures are from Zerodha Kite market data. I still could not find a rupee close I could source, so I am not giving one.

For 5 October, 5paisa, which publishes NSE's provisional data, shows foreign institutional investors (FIIs) as net sellers of ₹4,699.10 crore in the cash market and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) as net buyers of ₹5,181.60 crore. These are in line with the Trendlyne figures given in last evening's report.

Oil falls as Middle East exports recover

Reuters reported that Brent settled at $100.32 a barrel on Monday, down 1.89%, and WTI at $89.43, down 1.84%. According to the report, shipping data showed Middle East crude exports above their pre-war levels on four of the seven days in the last week of September, despite attacks on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Group of Seven has pledged to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from emergency reserves. Reuters said concern about supply disruption from the US war with Iran limited the fall.

Nasdaq closes at a record

Yahoo Finance reported that the Nasdaq rose 1.0% to a record close on Monday, the S&P 500 0.7% and the Dow 0.2%. Nvidia reached an all-time high, its first since May. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 3 basis points to 5.31%. The ISM services index for September was 54.9, against 55.4 the month before, and its prices index rose to 74 from 72.6.

SEBI expiry settlement: a report, no circular yet

Kotak Neo reported on 5 October that SEBI plans to stop using the closing auction session to set the settlement price of derivatives for at least a year, and to go back to the VWAP of the last 30 minutes of trading. The closing auction could stay for less-liquid stocks. The report said SEBI received about 20,000 suggestions on its consultation paper and expects to make the change by the end of October. The closing auction has applied to stocks in the derivatives segment since 3 August, and comments on the consultation were due by 3 October. I have not seen a SEBI circular on this.

Bank and retail business updates

Several companies released September-quarter business updates after Monday's close:

These are the companies' provisional business updates as reported, not full quarterly results.

Today's calendar

What I check at 9:00

These are the data points I look at before the open, not a forecast:

  1. Where GIFT Nifty is at 9:00 compared with the 22,635 in this note.
  2. Whether NSE's own page confirms the 5 October FII and DII figures.
  3. Brent at 9:00 against Monday's $100.32 settlement.

Questions people ask me

What is the closing auction session (CAS)?

The closing auction session is a short window after normal trading in which buy and sell orders are collected and matched at a single price, which becomes the stock's closing price. In India it was introduced for stocks in the derivatives segment from 3 August 2026.

What is a VWAP?

VWAP stands for volume-weighted average price: the average price of all trades in a period, with each trade weighted by its size. Before the closing auction, the settlement price of stock derivatives on expiry was based on the VWAP of the last 30 minutes of trading.
