Pre-market report for 1 October 2026: GIFT Nifty about flat, Wall Street mixed, Nifty at its lowest close since 30 March

6 min readBy NineFifteenAM

GIFT Nifty was 22,633 at 6:37 AM on Thursday, Wall Street ended mixed (S&P 500 −0.3%) and the Nifty closed at 22,620.45, its lowest since 30 March.

Thursday, 1 October 2026. This is what changed between Wednesday's close and this morning, taken from public data and news reports. It is a list of events and numbers, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.

Yesterday's session is covered in the post-market report for 30 September, and the previous morning's note is the pre-market report for 30 September.

Global cues this morning

Market Latest Change As of
GIFT Nifty 22,633.00 −44.5 pts (−0.2%) vs 22,677.5 at 3:30 PM on 30 Sep 6:37 AM IST
US 10-year yield about 5.3% up about 5 basis points Wednesday's close
US dollar index about 101.5 up about 0.1% Wednesday
WTI crude no level quoted rose about 1.9% Wednesday
Dow Jones 50,906.05 −0.9% Wednesday's close
S&P 500 7,651.54 −0.3% Wednesday's close
Nasdaq Composite 26,861.06 +0.2% Wednesday's close

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract, so it is not like-for-like with the Nifty 50's close of 22,620.45. It was 12.55 points above that close this morning, and about 0.1% lower than its own previous close of 22,655.5. Asian markets: I did not check them this morning, so I have no figures to report.

I am not printing a WTI or Brent price. Reported crude levels differed across sources on Wednesday, as they did for the 30 September report, and I could not confirm which was right.

Wednesday's numbers at home

Market Close Change
Nifty 50 22,620.45 −95.75 pts (−0.42%)
Sensex 72,480.29 −0.07%
Bank Nifty 54,633.05 +0.69%
India VIX about 13.5 official close not confirmed
USD/INR 95.94 (29 Sep close) 30 Sep close not confirmed

The Nifty closed at its lowest level since 30 March. The Business Standard headline on 30 September said "Sensex, Nifty set to post worst 9-month show in 15 years"; I have taken only the headline, and Wednesday was the last day of that quarter. For the VIX, Zerodha Kite data showed about 13.5, but I did not find an official close. For the rupee, the only confirmed close I have is Tuesday's 95.94, so I am not giving a Wednesday figure.

Wall Street ends mixed as growth data keeps yields up

US stocks were mixed on Wednesday. The Dow fell 0.9% and the S&P 500 fell 0.3%, while the Nasdaq rose 0.2%. The Associated Press said stocks fell as strong growth data kept bond yields elevated despite an encouraging inflation report. For the week, the AP reported the Dow down 1.8%, the S&P 500 down 1.2% and the Nasdaq down 0.8%.

The data released on Wednesday:

BabyPips reported the 10-year Treasury yield rose about 5 basis points to roughly 5.30%, and the 30-year yield was at its highest since 2002. Other reports showed a slightly lower intraday level, so I am describing it as about 5.3%. The dollar index was about 101.5, up about 0.1%.

Oil: WTI up about 1.9% on Wednesday

WTI crude rose about 1.9% on Wednesday, according to BabyPips; Yahoo Finance showed a similar intraday gain. FXStreet, citing Axios, reported that US–Iran talks had yielded little progress, and that the US Energy Department had announced a 40-million-barrel release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. As noted above, the crude price levels in different reports did not match, so I have left them out.

Foreign investors: confirmed figures and one unconfirmed report

Confirmed provisional NSE data is available only to 29 September: foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold a net ₹9,980.22 crore and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought a net ₹6,952.71 crore that day. For September through 29 September, FIIs sold a net ₹33,864.41 crore and DIIs bought a net ₹64,758.56 crore (NSE provisional data via Kotak Neo).

For Wednesday, 30 September, I found one tracker, StockPil, reporting FIIs net selling of about ₹10,148 crore and DIIs net buying of about ₹11,272 crore. This is a single unconfirmed report: NSE's provisional figures had not appeared on the other trackers I checked early this morning, so I am not adding these to the September totals.

Hospital stocks after the Supreme Court remarks

Hospital stocks fell on Wednesday after remarks in the Supreme Court about medicine markups; Apollo Hospitals closed 6.63% lower at ₹8,085. Business Standard reported the bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta noted a cancer medicine supplied to retailers for ₹2,700 carried an MRP of ₹27,000, and asked why the MRP of essential medicines could not be capped at 16% over the price to retailers. The full story is in the post-market report for 30 September.

Today's calendar

What I check at 9:00

These are the data points I look at before the open, not a forecast:

  1. Where GIFT Nifty is at 9:00 compared with the 22,633 in this note.
  2. Whether NSE's provisional FII and DII figures for 30 September have appeared.
  3. USD/INR and crude quotes, each from a named source.

Questions people ask me

What is GIFT Nifty?

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract on the Nifty 50 that trades at NSE International Exchange in GIFT City, for long hours including the early morning in India. Because it is a futures contract and not the index itself, its level is not directly comparable with the Nifty 50's close.

What is the PCE price index?

PCE stands for personal consumption expenditures. The PCE price index is a US inflation measure published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, tracking the prices of goods and services households buy. The core version leaves out food and energy.
