Hospital stocks fell after Supreme Court remarks

Business Standard reported at 11:16 AM that hospital stocks were falling sharply in morning trade, after remarks in the Supreme Court about markups on medicines. At that time Max Healthcare was at ₹915, Apollo Hospitals at ₹8,158.55 and Fortis Healthcare at ₹772.70.

According to BusinessToday and Business Standard, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta noted that a cancer medicine supplied to retailers for ₹2,700 carried a maximum retail price of ₹27,000. The bench asked why the MRP of essential medicines could not be capped at 16% above the price at which they are supplied to retailers.

By the close, Apollo Hospitals was down 6.63% and Max Healthcare 5.81%. Fortis fell 6.94% to ₹764.95, and Medanta fell 3.41% to ₹1,366.90. The Nifty Healthcare index lost 2.57%.

For context, hospital stocks had been under pressure once before on a regulatory proposal. On 11 August 2026, Outlook Business reported that they fell after a parliamentary standing committee on health proposed capping private hospital room rents at the rates of nearby three-star hotels.

BSE joins the Nifty 50, and four IPOs list

BSE replaced Wipro in the Nifty 50 today. On the day, BSE closed 3.50% lower at ₹3,088, from ₹3,200. Wipro, now outside the index, rose 1.10% to ₹158.51.

The month in numbers

FII and DII flows

NSE's provisional figures for 30 September were not available on NSE, Kotak Neo or 5paisa when I checked at 8:55 PM. I'll include them in tomorrow's pre-market report.

Over 25, 28 and 29 September, foreign institutions sold a net ₹19,027.37 crore. HDFC Sky's closing report put foreign portfolio outflows in September at about $2.7 billion.

Tomorrow and this week

What I'll check before tomorrow's open

These are the data points I'll look at, not a forecast:

  1. Where GIFT Nifty trades overnight compared with today's Nifty close of 22,620.45.
  2. NSE's provisional FII and DII figures for 30 September.
  3. Brent crude after the US session, and the rupee when currency trading opens.

Questions people ask me

Why did BSE join the Nifty 50?

BSE replaced Wipro in the Nifty 50 from 30 September 2026. Business Standard reported that BSE's six-month average free-float market value was about ₹1.4 trillion, at least 1.5 times Wipro's, which is the margin NSE Indices requires for a company to displace a current constituent.

What happens to a stock that leaves the Nifty 50?

Funds that track the index have to sell the stock and buy its replacement. Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research, quoted by Business Standard, estimated passive inflows of about $668 million into BSE, and outflows of about $89 million from Reliance and $56 million from HDFC Bank as their weights adjusted. On the day of the change, BSE closed 3.50% lower at ₹3,088 and Wipro closed 1.10% higher at ₹158.51.
