4 min readBy NineFifteenAM

Oil fell on Tuesday, Wall Street ended slightly lower with the 10-year yield at 5.25%, and foreign investors sold a net ₹9,980 crore of Indian shares.

Wednesday, 30 September 2026. This is what changed between Tuesday's close and this morning, taken from public data and news reports. It is a list of events and numbers, not a view on where the market goes next: I don't publish levels, targets or trade ideas.

Yesterday's session is covered in the post-market report for 29 September.

Global cues this morning

Market Latest Change As of
GIFT Nifty (October contract) 22,824.00 −13 pts (−0.06%) 6:34 AM IST
WTI crude $89.21 about −3.5% on Tuesday Wednesday morning
US 10-year yield 5.25% prior close 5.24% Tuesday's close

GIFT Nifty is quoted against its previous close of 22,837. The contract now runs to October, so it can't be compared directly with the Nifty's close of 22,716.20 or with the September contract's level of 22,717 at 3:30 PM on Tuesday.

Brent quotes differed on Tuesday. investingLive reported the front-month contract settling about 2.5% lower, near $103, while the Associated Press reported Brent at $96.16, down 1.7%. PTI had reported $106.86 during Indian trading hours. I could not confirm why the figures differ.

Foreign institutional investors sold a net ₹9,980.22 crore of Indian shares on Tuesday and domestic institutions bought a net ₹6,952.71 crore, according to NSE's provisional data. Together that is a net ₹3,027.51 crore of selling. On Monday the figures were −₹5,353.22 crore and +₹5,189.02 crore.

Oil falls on Tuesday

Crude fell on Tuesday. investingLive reported that WTI settled about 3.5% lower near $89, and that Saudi Arabia had resumed tanker loadings at Yanbu after the East–West pipeline restarted. It cited Kpler data showing Middle East crude exports of about 16 million barrels a day in September, the highest since the conflict began in late February.

The US Department of Energy also offered up to 40 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, according to investingLive and Trading Economics. investingLive noted that earlier offers of this kind drew limited take-up from buyers.

On the diplomatic side, the Associated Press reported that mediators continued to work with the United States and Iran on reaching a deal.

Wall Street: small falls, yields near 2007 highs

US stocks ended slightly lower on Tuesday. The S&P 500 fell 0.17%, the Dow 0.26% and the Nasdaq Composite 0.09%. The 10-year Treasury yield ended at 5.25%, after touching 5.28% during the day. Trading Economics reported that the 30-year yield reached 5.62%, its highest since June 2002.

US consumer confidence for September fell to 81.9, below the 89.2 economists had expected and the lowest reading in more than 12 years, according to Investrade's market review. Investors are waiting for US inflation and GDP data due on Wednesday.

Foreign selling on expiry day

Tuesday was the monthly expiry day for Nifty futures and options, as yesterday's pre-market report noted. Foreign institutions' net selling of ₹9,980.22 crore was the larger of the two days' figures this week, and domestic institutions' buying offset about 70% of it. I don't have a verified explanation for the size of the foreign selling, so I'm not offering one.

Today's calendar

What I check at 9:00

These are the data points I look at before the open, not a forecast:

  1. Where GIFT Nifty is at 9:00 compared with the 22,824.00 in this note.
  2. Brent and WTI crude, and whether the Brent quotes above have come closer together.
  3. The rupee when currency trading opens at 9:00.

Questions people ask me

What is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve?

It is a stockpile of crude oil held by the US government in underground storage. The Department of Energy can offer barrels from it to companies, typically when it wants to add supply to the market. An offer is not the same as a sale: companies decide whether to take up the barrels.

What does FII net selling mean?

Foreign institutional investors buy and sell Indian shares every day. Net selling means the value of shares they sold was greater than the value they bought that day. NSE publishes provisional totals for foreign and domestic institutions after the close, and the final figures can differ slightly.
