Tuesday, 13 October 2026. GIFT Nifty was 22,426 at 8:05 AM IST, 49 points above its 3:30 PM level of 22,377 on Monday (up 0.22%), while Japan's Nikkei 225 was down 2.52% after memory-chip shares fell in New York overnight. Brent slipped 1.20% to $105.37 a barrel. Monday's session, when the Nifty lost 0.70%, is in the post-market report for 12 October.
Memory-chip shares fell in New York, then in Tokyo
Wall Street was mixed on Monday. The Dow rose 195.60 points to 51,850.55, the S&P 500 slipped 4.30 points to 7,807.24 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 120.27 points to 27,245.90, according to the news-agency tally carried by La Nación.
Trading Economics put the Nasdaq's fall down to a selloff in memory-chip stocks. Yahoo Finance reported that China's ChangXin Memory Technologies announced progress on a new memory-cell design meant to raise storage density, and that Micron and SK Hynix fell more than 3% on the prospect of stiffer competition. Trading Economics had Micron down 3.9% and Nvidia down 1.3%; Yahoo Finance had SanDisk down 5.6%.
Two large stocks went the other way. Meta rose 3.4% after its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the company's newest AI model had caught up with those of the leading labs, and Salesforce gained 2.1% after a Bank of America upgrade.
Tokyo followed this morning. The Nikkei 225 was at 67,290, down 2.52% and falling for a fourth session in a row, which Trading Economics linked to the technology selling on Wall Street. Kioxia was down 9.3%, SoftBank Group 7%, Advantest 5.3% and Tokyo Electron 4.5%. The Shanghai Composite was down 1.17% at 3,753.
The US bond market was shut on Monday for a holiday, Yahoo Finance noted. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo report results today, and US inflation data follows on Wednesday.

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract, so it does not compare directly with the Nifty 50; at 8:05 AM it was 62.65 points above the Nifty's Monday close of 22,363.35. (How far GIFT Nifty can be relied on.) I could not find Hong Kong or South Korean index figures on a page that would open this morning, so neither is in the table.
Oil gives back part of Monday's rise
Brent rose 1.8% to $106.65 a barrel on Monday, La Nación's tally showed. Yahoo Finance linked that rise to Russian attacks on Ukrainian power plants. This morning it was down 1.20% at $105.37, which Trading Economics said ended a run of three rising sessions.
Trading Economics set out what is pulling each way. Russia partly lifted its restrictions on diesel exports on 10 October after its agreement with the US, which adds supply. Against that, US lawmakers have argued the agreement may breach US law on Russian energy imports, and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said strikes on Russia will continue while Moscow keeps hitting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, despite the energy ceasefire President Donald Trump announced on Sunday.
In the Gulf, Houthi attacks on Saudi airports between 6 and 11 October killed at least 20 people, including 12 at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on 10 October, Yahoo News reported. Trump has said the US may join Saudi strikes on the Houthis.
Inflation and HCLTech, both out after Monday's close
September retail inflation was 5.54%, up from 4.83% in August, with food inflation at 7.74% against 5.97%. A Reuters poll had forecast 5.4%. The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate to 5.50% on 7 October, and the 10-year government bond yield was 7.38% on Monday afternoon, up 8 basis points on the day, Business Today reported.
HCLTech reported a September-quarter net profit of ₹5,132 crore, up 21.18% from a year earlier, on revenue of ₹35,620 crore, and declared an interim dividend of ₹12 a share. The stock closed at ₹1,223 before the numbers were out.
