Friday, 30 October 2026. GIFT Nifty was at 23,005 at 8:05 AM, 30 points (0.13%) below its 3:30 PM level on Thursday, after Alphabet suffered its worst drop on record and pulled the Nasdaq down 1.38%. Thursday's 1.05% rise in the Nifty is covered in the post-market report for 29 October.
Alphabet's 12.64% fall drags the Nasdaq
Alphabet closed 12.64% lower, StockTitan reported, after Wednesday-evening results in which earnings per share came in at $2.12 against the $2.94 analysts expected and revenue at $127.58 billion against $127.89 billion, according to Yahoo Finance. Its cloud revenue doubled to $30.7 billion. The Associated Press called it the company's worst drop on record, after slower summer growth than expected and concern over whether its heavy AI spending will earn a return.
| US index | Thursday 29 October close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones | 52,342.56 | −132.54 (−0.25%) |
| S&P 500 | 7,720.39 | −23.59 (−0.30%) |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,184.72 | −365.13 (−1.38%) |
| Russell 2000 | 2,859.22 | +28.71 (+1.01%) |
The small-company Russell 2000 went the other way. Yahoo Finance's live coverage said most US stocks rose on the day, with health care, real estate and consumer staples leading a rotation out of technology.
Thursday's advance estimate put US third-quarter GDP growth at an annualised 3.4%, against 2.2% in the second quarter and a consensus of 3.2%, Trading Economics reported. The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.92% this morning, 0.02 percentage point lower; Trading Economics said the Fed had given no clear signal of a rate rise in December.
Intel and Amazon slide after the bell
Two more large results came out after the close. At 7:59 pm New York time Intel was down 23.01% in after-hours trading, StockTitan reported, after third-quarter revenue of $16.5 billion and a fourth-quarter revenue forecast of $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion. Amazon was 7.30% lower in its last trade before 8:00 pm, even though AWS sales grew 39%. Trading Economics carried after-hours falls of 23% and about 7% for the two. Neither move is in the index closes above.
Tokyo's chip makers lead the Nikkei lower
The Nikkei 225 was at 62,911 this morning, down 1,748.47 points (2.70%), and Trading Economics described renewed selling of technology shares after disappointing results from large US tech companies. Lasertec fell 9.1%, Advantest 6.1%, Kioxia 6%, SoftBank Group 4.9% and Tokyo Electron 3.6%. The Bank of Japan announces its policy decision today.
Oil settles a little lower
Brent settled at $114.88 a barrel on Thursday, down 44 cents (0.38%), and WTI at $102, down 78 cents (0.76%), Reuters reported. Both had been more than $2 lower during the session on hopes of US-Iran talks after Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei, and recovered part of the loss on reports of Houthi attacks on Saudi refineries.
Trading Economics showed a much lower Brent price this morning that does not reconcile with Thursday's settlement, most likely because it has moved to a later contract month, so I have left it out.
Foreign investors sell, domestic funds buy
NSE's provisional data show foreign institutions bought ₹13,400.30 crore of shares on Thursday and sold ₹14,343.90 crore, a net sale of ₹943.60 crore after net buying of ₹4,240.40 crore on Tuesday and ₹871.80 crore on Wednesday. Domestic institutions bought a net ₹1,924.40 crore, up from ₹643.40 crore (how to read FII and DII data).
